Health Notices and Alerts:

Important Information and Links to Information About the H1N1 Virus

The H1N1 Virus is a specific type of influenza virus which Aquinas is taking very seriously in the coming flu season, and which may have a direct impact on your child.

H1N1 has symptoms similar to the typical Influenza virus, but may be accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea. In some children, it can also cause seizures. In severe cases, H1N1 may require hospitalization; in rare severe cases, deaths have occurred from the virus.

The H1N1 Virus is contagious, and therefore as a preventative measure, children who have the flu should be kept home. Children who come to school and display symptoms of the flu will be sent home immediately.

Currently, children must remain home from school until all Influenze-Like Illness (ILI) symptoms, including fever, have been gone for 24 hours without the help of medicine.

New Physical Examination Requirements:

According to New York State Education Law, a physical exam is required for all new entrants to the school and at grades 2, 4, 7, and 10. These physicals should be performed by your own physician as each child has the best assurance of proper attention to his or her health needs when examined by his or her own doctor.

Please have your physician complete the physical exam form and return it to the school nurse.

Yearly Mandated Screenings:

The New York State Department of Education mandates the following yearly screenings:
• Vision – All new entrants in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10
• Hearing – All new entrants in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10
• Scoliosis – Grades 5-9

Sports Requalifications:

All student athletes are required to have an interview with the nurse and must be cleared by the nurse before participating in any sport.

Athletes must bring the following information to complete the requalification process:

• Proof of Physical Examination – Students must provide documentation of a physical examination within one year of qualifying. The health care provider's recommendation for the level of athletic participation is required. A blood pressure reading and pulse taken within the current year must be on record.

• Immunization Record – Must be current, including tetanus immunization every 10 years.

• Self-carry Medications (Including inhaler, epi-pen, etc.) – Must have physician's orders and signed parent permission must be current with school year.

• Physician's Clearance – If a student has been excused from physical education or sports for an injury or illness or has a medical problem, the student needs to be medically cleared by their physician. A written medical clearance statement from the physician needs to be given to the Health Office prior to resuming these activities.

• Sports Clearance Form – Completed and signed by the parent/guardian and student. Will be mailed to all student athletes prior to requalification dates.
