AQUINAS INSTITUTE DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM
Aquinas offers Driver Education for students two times per year. Information regarding the upcoming program is listed below. Please click this link to print information on the Fall and Spring programs.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Driver Education is offered to all eligible Aquinas students as a one-semester course in two parts:
-Road class during a student's study hall, lunch period, or after school
-Lecture classes held 3-4 p.m. (Tuesday and Wednesday OR Thursday and Friday)
-Classes will begin shortly after the start of each semester
Credit: The course earns .5 of a school credit. Students receive separate Road and Lecture grades on report cards.
Class size is limited to 20
Eligibility:
1) A student must be 16 years of age by September 15th for the fall semester
2) A student must be 16 years of age by February 1st for the spring semester
3) Students must possess either a valid driver's license or New York State Learner's Permit or obtain a Learner's Permit within one week from the beginning of the course.
Purpose and Objectives:
The primary purpose of Driver Education is defensive driving and accident prevention. Basic skills, essential for passing the NYS Road Test, and advanced techniques are taught.
Upon successful completion of the course a student will earn:
1) The MV-285 Certificate of Completion.
2) An Insurance Certificate accepted by most insurance companies for lower premiums on automobile insurance.
3) The 5-Hour Safe Driving Course Certificate (MV-278) will be awarded FREE after a test to anyone on a Learner's Permit who has not yet taken this pre-licensing course. Course Standards and Requirements:
1) A student must display good conduct, attention and respect for safe driving at ALL TIMES or risk being dropped from the course.
2) New York State Law strictly mandates attendance. Students exceeding three (3) absences CANNOT earn the Certificate of Completion or Insurance Certificate.
3) Students MUST keep a clean driving record during the course.
4) Road class absences may require mandatory make-up driving lessons at $25.00 an hour. Minimum of two students.
5) All homework assignments MUST be satisfactorily completed. Tuition: As an extra course offered as a service to Aquinas students, a fee must be charged to cover instructors, vehicle expenses, textbooks and administrative expenses.
Cost $415.00 Deposit $50.00 minimum
Balance: Due November 1 (fall semester) or April 1 (spring semester)
Registration Procedures:
1) Complete the registration form and submit it with a $50.00 deposit to Miss Habershaw.
Checks should be made out to Aquinas Institute. Checks returned for insufficient funds will have a $32.00 fee attached.
2) Applicants are listed according to the date of application
3) In assigning road groups, priority is given according to date of registration.
4) Registration does not guarantee acceptance. After the beginning of the course, students who were not accepted into the course will be notified regarding their options for the next time the course is offered or the refund of the deposit.
Course Start-up: Students MUST be in school to meet the instructor or administrator to get their classroom and road schedules. A brief meeting will be held by PA announcement during homeroom time for that purpose. The meeting will take place two or three days before the start of the course.
