Garth Fagan Dance Performance Inspires AQ Dancers

Forty-five students enrolled in the Aquinas dance program attended the season premier of the acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance Company at Nazareth College. Many of the students had never witnessed professional dancers performing live on stage. "The students were impressed with how strong, fast and physically fit the performers were," said Ms. Brett, AQ dance teacher. "Aquinas has long been a supporter of the arts and of students who wish to study the arts. There are only a handful of high school programs which can offer students the range and depth that our program does. By exposing our students to culture and the arts, we are preparing them to be citizens of the world."

Artists often interpret life and events through a variety of forms. AQ dancers are no exception, and are currently preparing work to audition for the department's January 12th Winter Dance Concert.

Sponsored by the Landmark Society, the Ghost Walk offers the drama, excitement and entertainment of a night at the theatre, all while enjoying a stroll through the autumn leaves on a beautiful October night. At each stop on the walk, the actors perform their scene from the front door or porch of an architecturally-significant home.

First All-School Mass in Newly Renovated Auditorium

The lights are up, the speakers in place, the curtains are hung and the doors opened to reveal renovations to the Thomas F. Bell '57 auditorium. The effort to restore the auditorium was a gift of the Bell family, championed by Robert Bell '57 in honor of his twin brother, Tom, who passed away in 2008.

Many events have already been held in the space, which includes state of the art lighting and sound systems, and the restoration of balcony seating, which had been converted to classroom space decades ago.

Bishop Matthew Clark blessed the auditorium during a special alumni Mass on September 19. Students assembled for the Opening of School Mass on September 23. This event marked the first time that the entire student body had gathered in the space for Mass since 1996.

Internationally Renowned Theatre Historian and Playwright Presents Master Class for AQ Students

Students participating in the Aquinas Theatre program had a unique opportunity to discuss the craft of playwriting with Thomas S. Hischak, an internationally renowned musical theatre historian and playwright.

Hischak is a Professor of Theatre Arts at SUNY Cortland and the author of the adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women that is to be presented by the Aquinas Theatre Department in November.

He shared his perspective on writing plays to AQ drama, acting, AP English and creative writing students at a special session on Monday, September 28. "Writing a play is like being an architect," he said. "An architect doesn't build the building, he or she creates a blueprint. A playwright hopes that a director, producer and actors will build upon the script to make the play come to life."

Hischak also worked with the cast of Little Women during an afternoon rehearsal, providing a dynamic example of how they might interpret his vision of the script.

Congratulations to the cast of Little Women, which will be performed in the Thomas F. Bell '57 auditorium, November 19 - 22:
